Hugo Assunção

Hugo Assunção has been a Professor of Chamber Music at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa since 2012, and has taught Trombone and Chamber Music masterclasses throughout Portugal and abroad.

He has performed and recorded with various groups and orchestras, including: Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra da Madeira, Orquestra do Algarve, Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa, Sinfonia Varsóvia Orchestra, Hot Clube de Portugal Orchestra, Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra, and the Crossfade Ensemble led by Daniel Bernardes.

He shares the Artistic Direction of the Gravíssimo! Festival with Yamaha Artist Sérgio Carolino, and has collaborated, performed, and recorded with artists such as James Thompson, David Taylor, Marshall Gilkes, Gyorgy Gyivicsán, David Bruchez, Gabriel Antão, Ricardo Pereira, João Martinho, Ruben Tomé, Francisco Couto, Jacques Mauger, Bart van Lier, Justin Clark, Robin Eubanks, Luis Bonilla, Eijiro Nakagawa, Christian Jones, Demondrae Thurman, Matthew Murchison, Thomas Rüedi, Anthony Caillet, Hélène Escriva, Tormod Flaten, Fernando Deddos, Luka Einfalt, Gene Pokorny, Bob Stewart, Floyd Cooley, Henrique Costa, Anne-Jelle Visser, Oren Marshall, Ricardo Carvalhoso, François Thuillier, Mike Forbes, Roland Szentpáli, Daniel Perantoni, Nimrod Ron, and Shimpei Tsugita.

In 2006, he recorded "Vox Gabrieli", with music for trombone and piano, and "A Different Era", as Music Director of the Ensemble Português de Trombones.

He has commissioned, premiered, and recorded works by Anne Victorino d’Almeida, Telmo Marques, Daniel Bernardes, and António Victorino d’Almeida.


He has held the position of Principal Trombone with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra since 1993.
