Sofia Silva Sousa

The violist Sofia Silva Sousa was born in Braga, where she studied at the Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory. She graduated in 2018 in London from the Royal Academy of Music, where she studied with James Sleigh and Martin Outram. In 2020, she completed her Master’s degree at the Royal College of Music in London, where she was a student in the class of Nathan Braude. 

She was Artist in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, in Waterloo, Belgium, between 2018 and 2023, where she studied under the guidance of Professor Miguel da Silva.

Sofia Silva Sousa made her debut as a soloist with the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra in 2016, after winning the Vasco Barbosa String Competition. 

In 2018, she was distinguished in Portugal as Young Musician of the Year and, in the same year, performed as a soloist with the Gulbenkian Orchestra. She also received the Maestro Silva Pereira Prize, following her victory in the 32nd edition of the Young Musicians Award of Portuguese Radio.

In the field of chamber music, she is a founding member of the Tejo Quartet, which was awarded the 1st Prize for Chamber Music at the 2019 edition of the Young Musicians Award. 

Since 2020, Sofia Silva Sousa has been a member of the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra.
