Yulia Deyneka

Born in Russia in 1982, Yulia Deyneka studied with Alexander Bobrovsky at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in her home city of Moscow. Moving to Germany in 2001, she went on to graduate from Rostock University of Music and Drama where she studied with Felix Schwartz, later gaining her soloist diploma under Wilfried Strehle at Berlin University of the Arts. Whilst still a student, she was awarded the position of Principal Viola in the Staatskapelle Berlin.

As a soloist, she has worked with celebrated conductors including Andris Nelsons, FrancoisXavier Roth, Zubin Mehta and Daniel Barenboim, performing in prestigious venues such as the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, and the Philharmonie in both Berlin and Paris.

Chamber music plays a prominent role in Yulia Deyneka’s life. She is a regular guest at numerous international festivals including Rolandseck, Jerusalem, Annecy, and the Mozart Week in Salzburg. Her chamber music partners include Guy Braunstein, Daniel Ottensamer, Emmanuel Pahud, Julian Steckel and Jörg Widmann. Yulia is co-founder of the Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet. For the opening of the Pierre Boulez Hall, the ensemble performed all of Schubert’s string quartets, and has since toured internationally with big names such as Elisabeth Leonskaja, Frans Helmerson and Christiane Karg.

Increasingly committed to contemporary music, Yulia has been an ongoing member of the Boulez Ensemble since its inception. With the ensemble, she has premiered works by many living composers including Aribert Reimann, Jörg Widmann, Olga Neuwirth, Johannes Borowski and Matthias Pintscher.

Daniel Barenboim and Yulia Deyneka enjoy a longstanding chamber music partnership and also collaborate in the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Since 2003 she has led the orchestra’s viola section and has been very active in fostering young talent from the Middle East.

In the Staatskapelle Berlin she is also mentor to the young violists of the orchestra academy. She has taught at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin since 2016, beginning a firm tenure there as professor in 2019. Yulia can be heard on the 2018 Deutsche Grammophon release of Mozart‘s piano quartets with Kian Soltani, Daniel Barenboim and Michael Barenboim. On the album “Soirée” (Pentatone), she plays alongside Magdalena Kožená and Simon Rattle.
