The Portuguese pianist David Santos appears worldwide in collaboration with singers, devoting his concerts programs primarily to Art Song repertoire. He studied with Leonard Hokanson, Axel Bauni and Irwin Gage. In 2009 he was awarded the first prizes at the 7th International Competition Franz Schubert and Modern Music in Graz, Austria, and the 1st International Schubert Competition for Lied Duos in Dortmund, Germany. Santos played in distinguished halls like the Konzerthaus and the Philharmonie in Berlin, the State Opera Theaters in Kassel and Meiningen, the São Carlos Opera House in Lisbon, the Arts Center deSingel in Antwerp and the Tonhalle Zürich as well as at the Macau Music Festival in China and the Tanglewood Music Festival (USA). He is a frequent guest in different international music festivals in Portugal and abroad. His recordings include Schubert’s Winterreise with baritone Luís Rodrigues (AboutMusic), Lieder by Schubert, Brahms, Schönberg and Busoni with bass-baritone Tomasz Wija (Thorofon) and Schumann’s cycles Op. 35, 36 and 40 with baritone André Baleiro (Codax). He was Lecturer for Lied Interpretation at the University of Music Franz Liszt in Weimar from 2010 to 2019 and has given masterclasses in Portugal, Brazil, Germany and Finland. Both in his artistic as well as his pedagogic work Santos devotes special attention to the relation between musical analysis and interpretation as well as to the presentation of concerts through commentaries to the respective programs. In this way the audience is introduced to the musical and poetic world of a wide repertoire, ranging from classicism to contemporary music and including a great variety of languages, styles and thematic subjects. He is Honorary Professor for Lied Interpretation at the University of Music and Theater in Mannheim and Lecturer for Piano at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin.
